Providing single-session consultations, short-term, and on-going therapy

Individual Therapy/Counselling

While I have specialized training in therapy with couples and families, I also work with individuals. My priority from when we first meet is to create an authentic connection where you feel respected, heard, and validated. While engaged in deep listening and back and forth conversation, I will invite you to share what is most important to you at the pace and manner that fits best for you. In our first meeting, I wish to learn about what is bringing you to therapy at this time and about the positive changes you might be hoping for through our conversations.

What is unique about what I bring to conversations with individuals is my focus on relationships and constant consideration of how ones' relationships with others intersect with the issues at hand. I am particularly interested in how relationships can be drawn upon as resources to support people in moving  forward in their lives.

Some of my particular interests are working with teens and adults in therapy around themes of grief/loss, chronic physical illness and disease, adjusting to change/life transitions, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression.

Couples and Family Therapy/Counselling

When meeting with couples, my role is to  work to understand each person's perspective and experiences, while at the same time, to listen for and draw out the primary emotions and needs underneath what is said. Together, I hope to explore how positive change can be made in the couple's interactional pattern to foster secure bonding and strengthen the couple relationship.

When meeting with families, my aim is to facilitate conversation amongst members about what is important to them by listening deeply, asking questions, and offering reflections, comments, and ideas as “food for thought”. I want to convey that all perspectives and experiences are valued through closely attending to each person and creating space for all members to participate in session. Together, I hope to explore the preferred visions for the family and assist in creating positive change in patterns of interaction that strengthen family relationships.

Counselling with Children and Adolescents

As a family therapist, previously practicing at a large Children's Mental Health agency, I have specialized experience and skill in connecting with children, adolescents/teens, and their families. In this work, I have assisted young people and their families experiencing a broad range of concerns, including: grief/loss, sexual orientation/gender-related issues, self-confidence/self-esteem, stress/anxiety,  self/body-image and eating disorders, depression, separation/divorce, adoption/kin families, and family conflict/communication.

Often incorporating a variety of creative methods including drawing, white-board work, play, puppetry, creative writing, and children’s literature, I am committed to creating a safe, trusting, and comfortable  environment for children and adolescents to participate in therapy.
